summer camp
| 4/15/2009 11:11:00 AM Email this article Print this article | | Summer Camp Guide Summer is just around the corner and it's time to begin preparing for the upcoming months. The Ithaca Times and the Tompkins County Youth Services Department are pleased to bring you this listing of summer camps and programs in and around our area. For convenience and affordability, note that many towns/villages offer summer recreation programs in schools and community centers throughout the County.
We try to list most of the pertinent information about each camp/program; however, you can get more detailed information by calling the camps or programs you are interested in directly. Below are a few things to think about when deciding on a camp or program for your child(ren).
It's not all in the name! Be aware that there are differences between "camps" and programs, workshops, or classes. Official camps must be registered with the New York State Health Department and meet specific criteria. Some programs, workshops, or classes offered, may call themselves a camp, however, they may be exempt from Health Department regulations due to duration, group size, focus or location. For example, some programs may be registered as school-aged child care programs through the Child Development Council but still call themselves camps. If you have any concerns or questions, 1) speak with the director of the camp or program you are interested in, 2) contact Audrey Balander at the County Public Health Department, 274-6688, or 3) contact the Child Development Council at 273-0259 about camps operated by school-aged child care programs (SACCs).
Reduced fees or scholarships: If fees are a problem, be sure to ask if scholarships are available, even if the descriptions fail to mention them. Be sure to ask for details.
For parents who receive public assistance, please contact the Department of Social Services regarding subsidized fees for 2009 camps for more information, contact: Carla Trenchard at 274-5219
Many camps will provide before and after supervision for an additional fee, making it feasible for working parents. Don't count a camp or program out automatically just because of the hours listed - make sure to inquire about supervision provided outside of camp or program hours.
Inquire directly about program accessibility for youth with disabilities. For advice or more information about mainstreaming youth into recreational programs, contact the Recreation Support Services the Ithaca Youth Bureau (607) 273-8364.
The content was prepared as a public service by Theresa Albert at the Tompkins County Youth Services Department. The Department receives tax support from Tompkins County, and the New York State Office of Children and Family Services. This information can also be found on the County's Web site at www.tompkins-co.org/youth/campguide/index.asp.
Enjoy and have a safe and healthy summer!
ACTOR'S WORKSHOP OF ITHACA - Teen Immersion Course
The Actor's Workshop of Ithaca will offer a three week immersion course in the Meisner Technique and on-camera audition preparation. This course will be kept very small, 7-9 students in total, in order to ensure that each student gets a maximum amount of time and attention. The class will be modified only slightly from our adult class format, so students who enroll must have a serious commitment to studying the craft of acting and be prepared for an intensive NYC acting studio experience. In other words, students must come ready to have fun, but work hard. The course will culminate in a presentation for parents during the last hour of the final class. During this presentation students demonstrate audition and improv skills. Students interested in signing up for this course are encouraged to attend our Spring Showcase on May 1st or May 2nd in order to get a better sense of the work they will be doing. Check out our Web site for details.

Wild Crafting Week 1: June 29-July 2
Harvesting and crafting the raw materials of the land is the focus this week. Our hands and creative minds will keep busy as we transform wood, stone, feathers, and bones with water, fire, and steel. We will also explore the practice of gratitude for what the wild has to offer us as we eat foods and drink teas from the land.
Scout Week 1: July 13-16
Traveling light, finding your edges, coming to your senses, and moving invisibly through the landscape are skills that belong to the ancient scouts. This week we will hone our own skills of nature awareness and self-reliance through challenging games and routines.
Scout Week 2: July 27-30
We will read more deeply into the landscape, camouflage with our surroundings, learn aidless navigation techniques and practice mastering the basics: shelter, water, fire and food. Scout Week 1 is not a prerequisite, but those who do both weeks will take their scout skills to a higher level.
Wilderness Week 1: Aug. 10-13
Travel with us into the wilderness. Explore the only National Forest in NYS as we navigate our way through forest, field and stream to find wild edibles and follow animals. The boundary-less feel of the Forest will expand our minds and awareness.
Wild Crafting Week 2: Aug. 17-20
The goals are the same but the season has changed. With different resources available to us than at summer's start, we will once again harvest, craft and eat off the land. Explore the limits of your survival skills while learning how to rely on the forest respectfully. Wild Crafting Week 1 is not a prerequisite, but those who do both weeks will connect with the seasonal changes in our woods.
Wilderness Week 2: Aug. 24-27
Explore the richness of our National Forest as we fill our bellies and bowls with wild blueberries. Celebrate the season as we forage and feast, build camps and fires, sing songs and play awareness games. Going beyond "survival", this will be a time to learn about caring for the forest while caring for ourselves. Wilderness Week 1 is not a prerequisite.

The Youth Leadership Corps is a new Youth Council program to connect teens (14+) with their community through volunteer service while also doing workshops for leadership building and event/outreach planning. After two compelling opening productions, Glimmerglass Opera began its second weekend with an all-time favorite, Mozart's comic masterpiece "The Marriage of Figaro." Don't let the title fool you; with the libretto by genius collaborator Lorenzo da Ponte, this opera is presented in Italian with English projected titles. The show was a truly remarkable achievement-a seamless, clearly delineated, musically excellent, and emotionally telling performance-matched only by some unscheduled thunder and lightning theatrics outside.
