  | | All Tomorrow's Parties offers intimate indie-rock experience |
While for most this Labor Day will mean one last opportunity for a BBQ or a dip in the lake, for just under 3,000 hard core music fans, the weekend will provide a rare opportunity to rub shoulders with indie rock icons. Wednesday, September 01, 2010 | | | | | | Local art spotlighted |
This year, art collectors will have another opportunity to "Buy Local" at the 20th annual Ithaca Artists Market at 2-8 p.m. Friday, July 30. In 2009, the Artists Market expanded to more than twice its size, taking over the entire Farmers Market at Steamboat Landing on a Friday afternoon and early evening. This year once again, all 88 booths will be filled in a unique, once-a-year, can't-miss event. For more information on the Artists Market, visit www.artspartner.org. Lords of Acid bloomed from Europe's burgeoning 80s acid-house scene, combining the crass and the camp, and driven by a break-neck pace. Produced by the techno DJ Praga Khan (Maurice Engelen) and led by a series of female vocalists, the band released a series of albums dedicated to masturbation, sadomasochism, rough sex and breast size though the '90s and then took a ten year hiatus. Ithaca's newest public radio station, WITH-FM (90.1) will broadcast live from the Commons on Friday, July 9. Scott Regan, host of the daily "Open Tunings" show that runs 9 a.m. to noon, will be on the air live from the Bernie Milton Pavilion during that time. He'll conduct interviews between and present live performances during his show, as well as the rest of the afternoon (except 2-4 p.m., when "World Cafe" is aired). Wednesday, July 07, 2010 | | | | | | Nate Marshall resumes Songwriter Night |
Local performer Nate Marshall, best known as one-half of the duo Nate & Kate, will reconvene his weekly Songwriter night at the Wildfire, beginning this Thursday, July 8 and running through August 19.
"I would like to get a songwriter scene going in Ithaca, a place that's a step above open mic nights, but a similar vibe where there's a variety," Marshall said last week. "In other towns, they do monthly songwriter showcases, and different songwriters from different bands talk about the process and do their songs stripped down. It's a low-key type of thing." For the past four years, the Finger Lakes International Dragon Boat Festival has attracted more than 3,000 spectators and paddlers to the annual summer celebration. This Saturday, July 10, the festival expands to Cass Park as the event expands to include performances, ex Wednesday, July 07, 2010 | | | | | | Tartan Times: Ithaca Scottish Games move to Stewart Park |
The third annual Ithaca Scottish Games and Celtic Festival return on Saturday, July 10. And there will be a couple of major changes for this year's event: a new venue in Stewart Park and no admission charge for most of the day's activities. That's right, except for a $10 cover for the ceilidh featuring the Town Pants at 6 p.m., there's no fee to see any of the events between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. Wednesday, July 07, 2010 | | | | | | Hank's World: Busy local cello virtuoso returns for rare Ithaca gig |
Longtime Ithaca resident Hank Roberts is the foremost avant-garde cellist in the music-making world. He also happens to be immensely modest - he is what journalists tend to call plainspoken. But a glance at his itinerary for the last calendar year has included:
A fall European tour with Bill Frisell's blues, bop and country hybrid the 858 Quartet, which was followed by a weeklong stint at New York City's The Village Vanguard to a resounding chorus of critical praise. I'm sitting in Ben Machan Howd's bedroom at his downtown Ithaca home. Howd presses play on his computer, and a trailer comes on the screen for his second feature film, "The Simple Things." It's the story of a love-struck young man (Jackie Zhang) and what happens to him after he steps on a tack in his room. What ensues, both in the trailer and a "double-date from hell" scene shot at the Antlers restaurant, is a rather ingenious, crazy farce replete with nods to "Psycho" that looks as if it was made by the progeny of Robert Rodriguez and Sam Raimi. Not a bad comparison, as it turns out, since Howd loves Raimi's films and idolizes "Evil Dead" star Bruce Campbell. Wednesday, June 23, 2010 | | | | | | Slow Down: DJ Screw gets his due | Robert Earl Davis, Jr., or better known as DJ Screw, was a Houston producer best known in his short life for his "screwed down and chopped" or "screwed up" mix tapes. By slowing down records through pitch control on a turntable, he forged a style through the 90s that grew from a regional phenomenon to a sound that resonated throughout the country, and left a legacy of between 500 and a thousand mix tapes, as well as artists in disparate genres who are indebted to his approach. Suicide has recently come to Ithaca in a very public, and at times controversial, way. This past academic year, after three years with no suicides, Cornell experienced what is known in the scientific community as a "suicide cluster." OK, so maybe you're like me and you thought this whole JetBlue flight attendant story was good for maybe one news cycle.
